“A terrific debut novel from this experienced screenwriter.  Mark Fiorito takes us on a journey into Mexico’s Baja Peninsula that is one terrific adrenaline rush.  This well-written debut gives the reader great insight into drug cartels in Mexico, the problems on our borders and those involved in policing both sides of the border.  Fast paced, intelligent and suspenseful, this thriller sets the tone for a memorable read.  I have worked with John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, Shelby Foote, Gerald Ford and Gregg Allman and I expect great things from this new author.  This is definitely the kind of auspicious debut that will keep people reading novels for years to come.”  Edward F. Finnegan, Publisher, The Tamarack Press

“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked up “The Run.” I was more than pleasantly surprised by the author and the story. Major kudos!!! The book captured my interest from beginning to end. I felt totally connected to the characters, the setting and the story. Over the weekend, I couldn’t put it down until I finished. I could definitely see “The Run” as a movie.  Mark Fiorito tells a very well constructed and suspenseful story about three American heroes and their accidental encounter with a brutal Mexican drug cartel. The descriptions of people, places and events are vividly detailed, providing an insightful picture of the life and issues on the US-Mexican border. I felt like an eyewitness watching the story unfold. With each twist and turn, I found myself wanting to read more. And in the end, “The Run” comes full circle without being predictable.” Laurence H. Bloch, former Chairman of the Board, Transwestern Publishing Company, Rancho Santa Fe, CA

“This book has it all – great story – so many ups and downs – excitement – and every human emotion possible. Anyone that has traveled abroad or even to different parts of the US will relate to this story. The writing and attention to detail keeps you glued to the pages until the end. I really enjoyed the subtle comedy throughout the novel that keeps you lifted even throughout the most brutal happenings in the drug cartel world. Next time I cross the border, I’m definitely going to buy that Surfing Monkey with blue and white striped swim trunks and sunglasses. Classic! As a San Diego native and a frequent visitor to Baja California, I was impressed with the amount of detail, references and descriptions of many places, people, and culture. Even if you don’t live here, by the time you finish the novel, you’ll feel like a native. I really hope we get to see this on film, what a great movie it would be.” Derek Nicodemus, President, Skyy Limousine

“What an incredible RUSH!  Everything you would want from a trip across the border and back: the fun, the fear, the situations, all realistic and very believable.  Being from Texas and making my own trips to Nuevo Laredo and Juarez, this book brings back good and bad memories!  Good to see an author take a ride on ‘the dark side’ and bring this story to life!  Great work and look forward to more in the future!”  Chad Smith, President & CEO, The Corporate Playbook

“**Beware**- you will be hooked after the first page.  Captivating…on the edge of my seat the entire book!  This is a titillating and entertaining novel that provoked all of my senses.   I could taste the fear, see exactly where they were in San Diego and Mexico, feel JD & Sonny by my side, listening to their voices, smell the blood….. If you like action, suspense, SURPRISES, then this is the book for you. I highly recommend this book and become a victim of seduction.”  Dr. Heather Stephens, Clinical Psychologist, California Department of Corrections

“What starts out as a fishing trip from San Diego to Baja California becomes a deadly terror run when the main characters, of Mark Fiorito’s The Run, attempt to return home to the United States.  The novel begins with a riveting image of an anti-drug pamphlet in a pool of blood and ends with an equally riveting image of a blood-stained toy that was dropped by a Mexican girl as her family made their own run from Mexico to the U.S.  In between both images, Fiorito gives his readers examples of the best and the worst of the Mexican and the U.S. drug-war officials and also explicitly introduces us to two evil Mexican drug cartel chieftains and their murderous mob.  The novel has glimpses of love, marriage, family, love-lost, and a moving account of one character’s regret for his daughter whom he has never met (we also get to see this character transform from irresponsibility to heroism).  The last 100 pages of the novel must get read at one sitting as the heroes are being pursued by the vicious drug cartel mob that is intent on doing whatever it takes to keep Fiorito’s heroes from successfully completing their run from Mexico into the U.S.  The Run is a great read because of Fiorito’s cinema-graphic detail (we watch the adventure scene-by-scene rather than read it page-by-page); insightful dialogue; dramatic action; and because Fiorito’s protagonists are so authentic, we actually want them to complete their run to the United States.”  James Robert Emch II, Operations Specialist, Al Taqaddum Air Force Base, Iraq.

“From the moment, ‘He could feel large splinters of wood jamming far into the sides of both of his hands as he spilled out into the stagnant dust of the sidewalk,’ I was hooked.  Mark Fiorito’s The Run is an action packed, detail oriented, true as life adventure from the suburbs of San Diego to the drug wars of northern Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.  As a true page turner, the reader will not be able to end the adventure until they reach the, ‘mountain pass in western New Mexico’.   In a story told with enough room for you to be sitting in the back seat of the white Lincoln Navigator SUV along side Sonny with your buddies in the front seat you realize you’re in for the experience of a lifetime.  It’s as though you’re the cameraman for this action-packed thriller.  Taking it in scene by scene you’re dodging the bullets, running for your life praying someone somewhere is on your side.  If you’re looking for a spellbinding book, great adventure and an effective exercise program, The Run is all you’ll need.  I suspect it will soon be in a theater near you.” Maggie Cassaro, Author

“Friend of mine gave me this book and described it as a ‘page turner’. I read it in 2 days – all the action you want on this guy’s trip to Mexico. Liked the way the author developed his characters -especially “Sonny”. Why did they let the just out of jail Sonny come along ? Good thing they did.  Don’t go to a movie-spend your money on this book and hole up for a few days.”  Raymond Olson, Louisville, KY

Mark Fiorito does an excellent job of setting a story in San Diego with life long friends and family and the appeal and lure of a Mexico fishing trip.  The characters are real everyday people who get pulled into the dark side of Mexico’s drug cartel.  This book is both captivating and thought provoking as you try to figure out the next moves of a deadly game of chess between the cartel and the men on the run.  This would be a great story for a movie!!!!”  Frank Siu, La Costa, CA

“This was a really great read. Good description that sounded like Stephen King at times and the dialog was a lot like Tarintino(sic). I felt the tension between JD and Sonny, good build up of the Marty character and the relationship between him and JD. I am a San Diego native and appreciated the place name drops. The pacing was nice and brisk with a few critical reveals toward the end.  I really liked how the 1st and the last page tied it all together. And the last page in the afterword was a SUPER SHOCKING ENDING. I was wanting resolution and you REALLY got me on that. GREAT ENDING.”  Sean Lombardo, San Diego, CA
