THE RUN was originally written in October 1999 as a screenplay. I shopped it around Hollywood and it was quickly picked up by an independent production company. Two directors, several actors and a director of photography were immediately interested and on board. Some funds were raised for the project but, as happens more often than not in the film industry, money became tight and the production stalled. Then the unimaginable happened, 9/11.
After careful consideration, I decided to shelve the project due to my concern that some might view the premise of the story and professions of the main characters as trying to capitalize on the disastrous circumstances at hand. I actually did it more so out of respect for firefighters, who were now at the focal point of this tragedy and thrust into a sudden and heart wrenching limelight. Real life and real death had taken center stage. There would be time for fiction in the future but, it clearly wasn’t now.
It was in 2008 that I dusted off the script and revisited the story. I felt enough time had passed to contemplate doing something with it. I still found the concept of the story very intriguing. However, this time I thought it might be more interesting to take the resurrected manuscript and rewrite it as a novel. This new direction was partially due to my experiences in Hollywood but, mainly because I had never attempted one. It seemed like a creative and formidable challenge. It was truly an engaging process.
I hope all who read THE RUN are immersed in the story and enjoying the fruits of my effort.
